DAIRYLAND WALKERS MONTHLY MEETING
MADISON PUBLIC LIBRARY
JANUARY 8, 2001
Officers Present: Tom Doyle
(President); Bonnie Hamer (Vice President); Karen Reger (Secretary);
Treasurer (Bob Sparks), Assistant Treasurer (Russ Crane)
In Attendance: 24
The meeting started at 7:00 p.m. with
an introduction of Barbara Flesch, a yoga instructor, by Judy Fritz,
Meeting Program Coordinator. Barbara talked about the benefits of
doing yoga to help us in our walking, and then she had the group stand
up and do some yoga stretches.
Everyone introduced themselves to the
group. Karen Reger is now the new secretary, succeeding Judy Meidl,
who had held the position for five years. Russ Crane is now going to
help Bob Sparks with Treasurer duties. Bob gave the Treasurer's
Report. The beginning balance on October 19, 2000, was $2,590.77, and
the balance on hand as of January 8, 2001, was $1,174.92. (A
breakdown is included with this report.)
The next meeting will be at the
Middleton Public Library on February 12, 2001. The speaker will be
Jim Draeger of the State Historical Society speaking on "Wisconsin
Architecture, Continued." The March meeting has not been set yet, but
the April one will be at the Willy Street Co-op.
The exact number of club members is not
known for sure, but 175 newsletters were printed, just a few more than
what was needed to mail out.
Bonnie Hamer mentioned that last year,
more people from Wisconsin did the Capitol Walk than people from out
of state.
The Starting Point 2001 books
are in and are for sale from Stores. There are also a number of state
bars for those interested.
The year-round and seasonal events
booklets for 2001 have now been printed. One correction: the Devils
Lake State Park seasonal walk is a 12K, not a 10K. A few people have
already done some of the year-round walks. The next special event
will be a snowshoe/skiing/walking (depending on the weather) outing on
January 27 at the Riverland Conservancy near Merrimac, put together by
Bill and Beth Levers.
The club award this year for the
Syttende Mai will be a tumbler, again done by Kim Stanfill-McMillan,
to complement the previous awards she has made for us.
In answer to a question, Don Suloff
indicated that the Middleton year-round would be difficult to do when
there's a lot of snow and/or ice. Nancy Spaeni, event box coordinator
for the Arboretum year-round, said that Bluephies Restaurant no longer
serves breakfast. She will look into that further, to check on the
hours they are open.
Phil and Karen Crawford from Mineral
Point talked about an AVA walk they had done in North Carolina.
Tom Doyle brought up the subject of
giving discounts to frequent walkers as an incentive to do more
walks. This may be a subject for further discussion.
Ruth Pederson has been gathering data
from club members about T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. No one item has
garnered enough votes to make it a stand-out, but the club will
definitely have something for members in the future.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
