DAIRYLAND WALKERS MONTHLY MEETING
MONONA TERRACE
MARCH 7, 2001
Officers Present: Tom Doyle (President); Bonnie Hamer (Vice
President); Karen Reger (Secretary); Russ Crane (Assistant Treasurer)
In Attendance:
25
The meeting began
with an introduction of the featured speaker by Judy Fritz. Betsy
Haynes of Haynes Photography, Spring Green, talked about types of
cameras, lenses, and film, and also showed some examples of photos she
has taken. Because she has participated in Dairyland Walkers events
and as a thank you for her program, she was given a one-year
membership in the club.
This program was a
good introduction to the Dairyland Walkers first annual volksmarching
photo contest being coordinated by Judy Fritz. Flyers were passed
around to the attendees. The contest will run from March 1 to October
25 and must involve AVA events/gatherings. The photos will be shown
at the December meeting, with the top winners being submitted to the
Wanderer. The judges are not known at this time.
Russ Crane gave the
Treasurer's Report, a copy of which is attached.
The next meeting will
be held on April 10 at the Willy Street Co-op on Williamson Street.
Bob and Jo Sparks will talk about walks they did in England and
Scotland. The May meeting will be held on the 9th at the Aldo Leopold
Center in Monona. There will be a short hike at 6:30, before the
meeting,. New Balance "goodie" bags may have to be stuffed at this
meeting for the Syttende Mai walk later in the month.
Upcoming events
include a walk at Elver Park on May 12, and the Syttende Mai walk on
May 19. Sign-up sheets were passed around for volunteers.
Ruth Pederson is
taking orders for T-shirts, polo shirts, and sweatshirts. The
deadline is April 10. The logo is the same as we had on previous
shirts.
People who don't
currently have name tags put their names on a list that was passed
around. It will be given to Paula Romeo so she can make tags for
those people.
The initial order of
Starting Points has all been sold. Those wanting a copy should
call Bob Sparks who may place another order.
Tom Doyle mentioned
that while participating in the Gulf Shores, Alabama, walks, he was
talking to a club president who said her club held weekly walks of the
walk and eat type. Tom wondered if it would be feasible for our club
to do a weekly walk. The walks would be our normal year-round or
seasonal walks, but they would not necessarily start at the starting
point due to the parking situation. But the route would go by the
starting point so books could be stamped. The walks would start at a
certain time and be led by someone who knows the route and could
introduce new members to the concept of the walk box. This may be an
opportunity for newer members to become involved in the club, and for
"older" members to share the walking experience with others.
Several Dairyland
Walkers are planning on going to the AVA convention later this year.
Tom is still thinking about a basket of Wisconsin products to send to
the convention.
Bruce Dewey reported
that he did the Andersonville, Georgia, AVA walk. This was a prisoner
of war camp during the Civil War where the largest number of prisoners
died. He also did the capital walk in Tallahassee, Florida, as well
as the Gulf Shores walks. Bruce joined the club as an aid to his
weight-reduction program, and he's lost 65 pounds since last March.
He has also done 43 AVA walks since the first of the year.
The meeting adjourned
at 8:25 p.m.
