DAIRYLAND WALKERS MONTHLY MEETING
INN ON THE PARK
JULY 10, 2001

Officers Present:  Tom Doyle (President); Bonnie Hamer (Vice President); Karen Reger (Secretary); Bob Sparks (Treasurer); Russ Crane (Assistant Treasurer)

In Attendance:  16

The meeting was held after the regular Walk-a-Week walk (the Capitol walk) in the Inn on the Park restaurant.

Volunteer sheets for the MacKenzie and Governor Nelson walks (August 11 and August 26, respectively) were passed around.  An incorrect date was listed for the MacKenzie walk in the July newsletter.  The Quesnells will be out early on the 10th, putting up the necessary signage.

There are five Starting Points left, which will go on sale for a discounted price.  The walk coordinators for the year-rounds and seasonal walks have to have their paperwork in soon to make sure they appear in the 2002 Starting Point.

There was a discussion about perhaps moving the Devils Lake walk box from the Nature Center to be more readily available to walkers.  Perhaps to a restaurant or other business outside of the park, or having it in a protective box outside of a building on the grounds.  By doing that, the walking time might be able to be extended from the present Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends.

The last newsletter contained a sheet of proposed club format changes, which was discussed at length.  There will now be nine people on the Board.  The following is a tentative list of volunteers for various positions:

Vice President – Jo Sparks (Board Member)
Secretary – Judy Fritz (Board Member)
Treasurer – Russ Crane (Board Member)
Liaison to National Organization - Tom Doyle (Board Member)
Membership Chair / Store Keeper – Tom Doyle
Newsletter Editor – Bonnie Hamer (Board Member)
Publicity / Public Relations Coordinator – Karen Reger (Board Member)
Year-Round Events Coordinator – Bruce Dewey (Board Member)
Scheduled Events Coordinator – Don Suloff (Board Member)
Year-Round or Seasonal Event Walk Box Coordinators – consists of 11
            people

Summer Walk-a-Week Coordinator – Richard Fritz
Bus Trip Coordinator – June Doyle
Club Web Page Coordinator – Angie Sparks
Event Equipment Custodian – Russ Crane

The positions currently left open are the President and the Adopt-a-Highway Coordinator.  Bill Kloster suggested having the Board elect a Chairman from the nine members who would assume the duties of a President during Board meetings, and abolishing the office of the President if no one volunteers to fill that position.

June Quesnell volunteered to take over the Capitol Walk since Bonnie will become the Newsletter Editor.

It was mentioned that perhaps we might want to use a P.O. Box for the receipt of walk stamps.  In that way anyone could pick up the stamps if someone would be gone over that time.

There is a problem of left-over awards from various walks.  It was suggested not having dates on awards, or having a club pin as an award for all the walks.

Suggestions for future meetings:  The new McKay Center at the Arboretum, the new Heritage Center at Lake Farm Park, having people show their travel slides or photos, showing a video from a walking tour company.  Judy Fritz will set up the September meeting.  The December meeting will consist of the annual party at the Doyles.

While at the AVA convention, Regional Director Dan Peters introduced Ed Reid to a couple from Florida who plan on completing their 50-state odyssey in Wisconsin in July.  Ed will be in communication with them, with the club having a celebration in their honor.

Some of the people who participated in convention activities were the Quesnells, Ed Reid, Jo and Bob Sparks, and Lori Kinnard, who was the club representative, attending some meetings.  Our new Regional Director, as of June 30, is now Bonnie Johnson from Minnesota.

A discount program for people who do walks multiple times is being worked on.

The new Board members will meet next Tuesday, July 17.  Starting from the Sparks at 5:30, they'll do the Walk-a-Week Arboretum walk, meet at the Sparks, and discuss further the proposed club format changes, especially the office of the President.  Everyone is to bring a dish to pass, such as a cold salad.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35.
