Program
Barb Borde introduced
the Flow Motion Fliers, who gave a demonstration of tai chi. They did
several sets of movements, or forms, both individually and with
partners. They also did a series of forms using fans. Some gave
testimonials as to the benefits of doing this Eastern martial art,
which included building bone density, helping with balance, helping
with concentration, and being something that seniors are able to do.
Club members participated in several movements. A list was passed out
giving locations and times for classes that the group's coach
teaches.
Board Meeting Minutes
Copies of the Board
meeting minutes of January 7, 2002, were passed out.
Treasurer's Report
Russ gave the
Treasurer's Report. As of today, we have a balance of $872.39. We
are not going to have any awards for special events this year, so that
will cut out an expense. The newsletter will only come out every
other month, requiring more careful planning, but that will also cut
down on expenses. Bonnie indicated that the Post Office doesn't
really want us to staple our newsletters. Russ also mentioned that he
had the frequent walker coupons and the Starting Points
available at the meeting.
Snowshoe Event
Even though there was
no snow for this outing on January 27, those who did it said it was a
very nice event, good weather being a contributing factor.
Snowman Shuffle at East Towne Mall
This will be on
February 23, starting from the indoor area by the movie theaters. Ed
Reid is going to put a snowman consisting of nine parts (for the nine
walking laps) on the back of the start cards, and walkers will check
off a part as they complete a lap. He has been busy with publicity,
trying to get the word out. The walk has an early start time of 7:00
a.m., and walkers must be finished by noon. Mall management doesn't
want us interfering with shoppers. They may give us some handouts,
perhaps coupons for the food court, and they are going to furnish a
table and chairs. Ed and Bonnie would also like some help at the
start of the event.
Club Event Booklet
Bruce Dewey agreed to
have some more booklets printed (200 to 300 more) as we did not have
any extras to give out to people interested in our walks on this
particular night. Russ stated that people like to leave these in
out-of-state boxes, and the State Tourism Department uptown also is
interested in having copies of these.
Bus Trips
Sign-up sheets for
our two upcoming bus trips (to La Crosse and Mackinac) were
available. We have a block of rooms in a motel for the Mackinac trip,
in St. Ignace. Due to the expense, four people to a room might be a
possible option.
Future Board Meeting
The next Board
meeting will be held on March 18, at 6;00 p.m., at this same
location.
General Club Meeting
The next club meeting
will be on April 11, at Madison's main downtown library. It was asked
if we're having meetings on different nights, to enable people to come
at least some of the time. Jerry indicated that that is being done –
to vary the meeting nights, realizing that not all people can make it
on a certain night.
Stores
Russ said that he
needs to order some more start cards and state bars.
Syttende Mai
Jerry indicated that
workers are needed. Kim Stanfill-McMillan is again making the club
award. Bruce indicated that last year, he started walking at about a
quarter to six, finished the walk, not being crowded, got on the
shuttle bus to Madison, and saw the crowd making its way to
Stoughton. Ron Moore said that things were better last year on the
route – water was available sooner and there was food for
participants.
Walk Boxes
Karen mentioned that
when she and Russ did the Capitol walk the previous Sunday, there
weren't many A awards in the box. Ron Moore said that was also the
case when he had done the walk, and thought that there should be more
awards what with the nice weather perhaps encouraging people to get
out and walk. Ron also mentioned that some of the directions for that
walk were a little confusing. Karen indicated she had written some
comments on the back of her start card. But people agreed that the
new route was more like a 10K should be, and it was a nice walk.
It was mentioned that
the East Side and Arboretum walk boxes have a lot of different awards
in them, and perhaps we didn't have to have quite that many. Next
year all the awards will be B awards. It was pointed out that in
looking at the Starting Point, many walks throughout the
country either have B awards and/or credit only walks.
Russ mentioned that
he'd like the walk box coordinators to check on their boxes
periodically, every two weeks if possible.
Walks
The Middleton walk
has been reversed, and there is an alternative to crossing the water
if there has been a lot of rain. One way to vary walks is to do them
in the reverse direction – it makes you see things in a different
way.
The routes are in
good shape, but there is some ice in a few places.
Bruce reported that
he had recently done four walks in Hawaii. Ed had done the Biltmore
House walk, which he will give a presentation on in June.
The meeting was
adjourned at 9:00.
