DAIRYLAND WALKERS MONTHLY MEETING
THE MAIN MADISON LIBRARY
APRIL 9, 2002
Officers Present: Bob and Jo Sparks (Co-Vice Presidents); Russ
Crane (Treasurer); Karen Reger (Secretary); Barbara Borde (Member at
Large)
In Attendance: 26
Meeting
·
The Wilsons were not able to attend the meeting, so Bob
Sparks presided.
·
Everyone introduced themselves and, if appropriate, said
what capacity they served in the club.
·
Russ gave the Treasurer's Report. A donation of $50.00
was given to the AVA office for their computer fund. The current
balance as of today is $2,969.04, but a lot of that is earmarked for
the two upcoming bus trips. The uncommitted balance is $1,077.57.
·
Bruce Dewey indicated that all the walk boxes are ready,
including the boxes for the seasonal walks and bike rides, which
started on April 1. He also said that several walk box coordinators
would like to step away from their duties in 2003, so if anyone is
interested in becoming a coordinator, please contact him. It's a
routine kind of thing – checking on the boxes approximately every two
weeks, making sure there are enough supplies, etc. He has to know if
anyone is interested by August, as that is when the event descriptions
have to be sent to the AVA for inclusion in the Starting Point.
The bicycle box is still at Williamson Bicycle Works at this point.
If anything changes, due to the reported closing of the store, it will
be announced in the newsletter.
·
There were six people who helped with the highway
cleanup on April 7. There was an auction next door to Nora's – from
all the vehicles parked along the roads, we thought we had a lot of
help!
·
This was the second night in the Walk-a-Week series,
again coordinated by Richard Fritz, with some people first doing the
Capitol walk and then coming to the meeting. The walks start at 5:30,
and the query was made as to whether people could start earlier than
that. Richard will usually be ready with the box at 5:00, and someone
will stay at the start until 5:30.
·
We need five more people for the La Crosse bus trip.
Twelve seats are left on the Mackinac bus trip.
·
Volunteers are still needed at the starting point of the
Syttende Mai.
·
Don Suloff has the flyer ready (which needs to be
proofed) for the Middleton Hills walk to be held on June 1. It will
incorporate part of the present Middleton walk, plus a new section. A
sheet was sent around for volunteers.
·
The next Board meeting will be held at the Middleton
Library, from 6:00 to 8:00.
·
The next general meeting will be held at the Monona
Library, starting at 7:00 p.m.
·
Gwen Kraemer brought cookies and juice, which was a
welcome treat.
Program
The speaker was Chris Rumbelow, an
elementary physical education teacher in Madison. He spoke about his
adventure of walking the Appalachian Trail, the longest continuous
walking path in the world, starting on March 15, 1992. He took an
unpaid leave of absence and kept in touch with his students back in
Madison, keeping them up to date as to where he was. The walk starts
from Springer Mountain in Georgia and ends at Mount Katahdin in Maine,
approximately 2,200 miles. He talked about his preparation for the
trip, what he took along, and events that happened along the way. He
showed two videos of people giving their thoughts on the walk, but did
not have time to show his own slides before the library closed.
The meeting adjourned at 8:50.
