THE ASSOCIATED BANK
(on Londonderry Drive)
OCTOBER 8, 2002
Officers Present: Pam Wilson (Co-President); Bob Sparks
(Co-Vice President); Russ Crane (Treasurer); Karen Reger (Secretary);
Barbara Borde (Board Member at Large)
In Attendance: 15
Meeting
Bob Sparks presided over the
meeting as Pam did not arrive until after it was underway.
Introductions
As attendees usually do, everyone
introduced themselves.
Secretary's Reports
Paper copies of the last Board meeting
and the last general club meeting minutes were passed around. They
were both approved.
Treasurer's Report
The balance at the last Board meeting
was $3,038.96. Total income since that time totaled $1,069.00. Total
expenses were $774.49. The current balance as of today is $3,333.47.
Bob made the observation that that is a
lot of money to have on hand. The club should be thinking of what to
do with it - what could be its potential use. Since the sanction fees
for the year-rounds have already been paid, club brochures would be
our main expense from now on.
Fees
Tom brought up the point that the AVA
has voted to change the maximum fee a club can charge for walk credit
from $2.00 to $3.00. This will become effective January 1, 2003. The
AVA would then receive $1.25 out of this $3.00. They currently get
$.50 out of the present $2.00 fee.
Russ gave his opinion that we should
continue to charge the maximum, thereby increasing our fee to $3.00 as
he feels other clubs will raise their rates. That brings up the
question of what we should then charge for our frequent walker
coupons.
This will be a subject for the next
Board meeting.
Free Walkers
Tom mentioned that we offer people the
option of walking for free. This seems to be pretty rare – most clubs
charge a $1.00 minimum fee. Russ said he was opposed to the $1.00
minimum, asking what expenses were really associated with free
walkers. Tom reported that for the Lake Geneva walk, for July,
August, and September, four people did it for an award and credit,
four walked for free, and 43 did it for credit only.
Don Suloff indicated that at the
Portage walk, 12 out of 61 were free walkers, and at the Elver Park
walk, 23 out of 100 were free walkers.
Walk Tallies
Bruce Dewey compared year-end figures
for last year versus third quarter figures for this year:
Bike Events
Next year, the three bike routes will
have the same stamp number.
New Events
The Middleton Hills walk will be a new
year-round walk for next year. Also, there will be a new walk in
Milwaukee. Bruce wasn't sure if it was sanctioned as a seasonal or a
year-round.
Governor Nelson Walk
Don indicated that a group of slower
10K walkers would leave at 6:30, the faster 10K walkers would leave at
6:45, and the 5K group would leave at 7:00. Tom Doyle will lead one
faster 10K group, but Don needs another volunteer to lead a second
faster 10K group.
Highway Cleanup
This will take place on the 20th,
starting from Nora's II.
Program
Barb Borde introduced the speaker for
the evening, Wayne Pauly, who is a Restoration Ecologist for the Dane
County Parks Department. He restores prairies, woodlands, and
wet-lands. He talked about his work, inserting a bit of plant
folklore, which he used to teach, as well as hints to ward off
chiggers and mosquitoes. He mentioned that Walking Iron County Park
is a good place to see pasque flowers and prairie smoke, and Festge
Park is a good place to see bloodroot. He is also involved in prairie
seed collecting, coordinating many children in this activity.
The meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
