Meeting
Welcome (Jerry Wilson)
Jerry called the meeting to order at
7:05 p.m. He mentioned that several regular attendees were not
present because they were doing some walks in the South in association
with President's Day. He introduced the officers that were present,
as well as Miles and Wendi Sommerfeldt, who obtained the use of the
Friendship Hall for the evening.
Secretary's Report (Karen
Reger)
Several paper copies of the December
general meeting minutes had been put out on a table for perusal.
There were no changes or additions and the minutes were accepted.
Treasurer's Report (Russ Crane)
The balance as of the last Board
meeting on January 9 was $3,142.64. Total income since that time
amounted to $878.00. Expenses were $331.10, bringing the new balance
to $3,689.54, making the net change $546.90. He is expecting a bill
from the AVA for over $900.00 (for event and distance books, new
member packets, Starting Points). The report was approved, with no
discussion.
New Balance Shoe Winner (Russ
Crane)
The winner of the drawing for a pair of
New Balance shoes at Morgan's Shoes at Hilldale from the special event
walk at East Towne was Ron Moore, who was present at the meeting, and
he received his certificate.
Refreshments (Jerry Wilson)
Jerry thanked Miles and Wendi for
bringing treats and beverages, as well as thanking Karen and Russ for
bringing treats as this was Karen's birthday. The group then sang
Happy Birthday to Karen.
Walks
A sign-up sheet was passed around
asking for volunteers at the Historic Nakoma Walk, which will be held
on April 12. The question was asked if there would be a 5K in
connection with this event, and the answer was yes.
Bonnie Hamer mentioned that she had
asked for volunteers in the last newsletter for the East Towne Mall
walk, and she received several phone calls from people willing to help
out.
Program
Wendi introduced the speaker, Chris
Rumbelow. He had been a speaker at one of our previous meetings, but
did not have enough time to completely cover his subject. Over the
space of several years, he completed walking the Appalachian Trail.
He showed slides and described the planning that went into the effort,
some of the people that he met on the trail, the shelters that are
present, the weather along the way, and gave much more information.
Conclusion (Bob Sparks)
Jerry had to leave early, so Bob closed
the meeting at 8:45 p.m. Chris stayed around for awhile longer and
answered questions that people had.
