  This is one of three events that the Madison Area Volkssport Association and the Greater Des Moines Volkssport Association are hosting this weekend.  The other events are at Pikes Peak State Park in Iowa and Wyalusing State Park in Wisconsin.  (Details)

Hours:
Sat, Oct 18 - Start between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  Finish by 5:00 p.m.
Sun, Oct 19 - Start between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.  Finish by 3:00 p.m.

1 for both distances  (Scale 1 to 5 with 5 being the most difficult.)

1. Authors and Literary Landmarks ● August Derleth - "The House on the Mound" -Historical novel of Wisconsin's first decade is based on the lives of Jane and Hercules Dousman, their years together from 1848 to 1857 in the Villa Louis at Prairie du Chien.

Directions:

From Madison:  Take US-18/151 west toward Dodgeville. Follow US-18 west to Prairie du Chien.
From LaCrosse: 
Follow Hwy WI-35 South (Great River Road) to Prairie du Chien.

In Prairie du Chien at the intersection of WI-35 & Blackhawk Ave turn west toward the river. Lawler Park is at the end of Blackhawk Ave. on the riverfront.

Look for the AVA signs & banners.

Description:

Prairie du Chien's recorded history began in 1673, making it Wisconsin's second oldest community.  In the early years, fur trade was the primary economic activity.  By the early 1800s several forts had been built in the area, among them was Fort Crawford.  In 1832 Sauk warrior, Blackhawk, surrendered to Colonel Zachary Taylor (future 12th president) at Fort Crawford ending the four-month Blackhawk War.  There is an abundance of historical sites in the city, many of which will be included along the walk route.
