Mackinac Island Walk (12K)

  Mackinac IslandWe are offering a Labor Day Weekend bus trip that will include this walk as well as an AVA sanctioned Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor day. We are sanctioning this walk as a three (3) month seasonal event to allow more walkers an opportunity to walk this unique and very interesting island.

Note:

This is what we call a remote start event. There is NO walk box to go to. You must pre-register by contacting the point of contact (POC) listed below or by completing the registration form.  See link below.

Upon receiving a signed Start Card (Registration Form) and payment, the POC will provide you with the Walk Directions, and instructions on how to obtain IVV credit stamps.

Start Location:

You must take a ferry to Mackinac Island from either St. Ignace, MI or Mackinaw City, MI. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the island. Suggest using Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry as the walk route begins at Shepler's dock on Mackinac Island.  Visit Shepler's website for ferry prices and schedule.

Directions:

To Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry, 601 N State Street, St. Ignace, MI  GPS: N 45 52.434  W 84 43.680 

From the south on I-75 cross the Mackinac Bridge, take exit 344-A and follow US-2 east (right) through the downtown district to the north end of town. 
From the North
on I-75 take exit 348 (Business loop 75) and go 3 miles. 
From the west
, follow US-2 east through town to the north end of St. Ignace.

 

To Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry, 556 E Central Avenue, Mackinaw City, MI  GPS: N 45 46.884  W 84 43.530 

From the south on I-75 (or US-31, which merges into I-75) take exit 337 or 338 and follow the signs. If you exit at 339, turn right, and continue to the stoplight (Central Avenue). Turn left and continue to the Shepler’s Gateway. 
From the North
cross the Mackinac Bridge, take exit 339 off I-75. Turn left at the stop sign. Continue to Central Avenue. Turn left and into the Gateway.

Description:

Route will circle this unique island where motor vehicles are prohibited. Most of the route is on open roads with little to no protection from the elements. There are numerous shops to explore in village area near the docks. There are no facilities, along the route,  outside the village. Although not directly on the route you may wish to explore Fort Mackinac as well as the Grand Hotel with its 660 foot long porch. The hotel may charge a fee just to enter the building. Walkers are advised to carry water and snacks as there are no shops outside the village area.
